American performer and teacher Tom Leabhart trained with Decroux in Paris and considers his legacy in advance of the Centre for Performance Research's annual Past Masters event which focuses this year on the work of the 'father of modern mime'. Decroux is sometimes designated the father of modern mime; often quoted yet seldom read, frequently mentioned yet rarely understood, Decroux's name flows easily with his contemporaries — Craig, Copeau, Meyerhold, Dullin, Jouvet, Artaud — but there seem more handles on the others to pull them from history's stream. Although their projects are vastly different, Grotowski is the only figure in twentieth-century theatre who is as widely known and similarly misunderstood. Reasons for this abound, among them: Decroux's own temperament and uncompromising way of working; the high visibility of some Decroux students from an earlier time Barrault and Marceau who represented the less abstract phase of Decroux's teaching; the difficulty of 'selling' or publicising something which cannot be explained in five words or fewer; our commercial and secular culture faced with what is essentially a 'sacred' art.

Theatre de l'Ange Fou is a theatre company that primarily focuses on mime, based in London, England. Its skilled directors are Steven Wasson and Corinne Soum.

It was created in Paris in and relocated to London in [1] It was co-founded with the International School of Dramatic Corporeal Mime, formerly known as the Ecole de Mime Corporel Dramatique, a theatre school that teaches corporeal mime.

History

The Theatre de l'Ange Fou and the International College of Corporeal Mime (formerly established as the Ecole de Mime Corporel Dramatique) were created in Paris in by Wasson and Soum, the last assistants of Etienne Decroux, "the father of Modern Mime", and relocated to London in The International Academy of Corporeal Mime is passionate to the development of the technique, growing repertoire and dramaturgy of Corporeal Mime, and suggestions a full range of professional training programmes.[1]

For a time, the theatre and company was in a country church in Spring Green, Wisconsin.[2]

The company has toured throughout Europe, Russia, the Merged States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico and the Middle East.

It has created more than 20 authentic plays, devised pieces as successfully as adaptations, ranging from duets to large ensemble works: The Little Dictator (parts I & II), Beyond the Garden, Crusade, Entangled Lives, The Government Inspector and The Orpheus Complex.

Corporeal mime - Wikipedia: Étienne Decroux (19 July in Paris, France – 12 March in Boulogne-Billancourt, France) was a French star who studied at Jacques Copeau's École du Vieux-Colombier, where he saw the beginnings of what was to become his life's obsession–corporeal mime.

Using Corporeal Mime as the base of their creative work, the dramaturgical construction of their plays takes the form of a voyage where the characters traverse varied landscapes and lifetimes, some real, some imaginary. The world of the Theatre de l'Ange Fou, this visionary world of contrasting delicate and darkness, of metamorphosis, is populated by a family of invented archetypes in unknown yet familiar settings.

Throughout their various productions, the company explores the infinite possibilities of the interaction between the corporeal score and the spoken text, music and film.

Alongside this personal creative development, in Wasson and Soum took up the challenge of re-introducing the repertoire of Etienne Decroux to the public with their reconstruction, and performances by the Theatre de l'Ange Fou, of most of his major pieces (including La Meditation, Les Arbres and L'Usine) in The Man Who Preferred to Stand, and more recently, Passage of Man on Earth and Resonance.

This was the beginning of the transmission process that is today the basis of the teaching in the International Educational facility of Corporeal Mime.
