Georg Gerson Iggers (December 7, – November 26, ) was an American historian of modern Europe, historiography, and European intellectual history.[1]
Life and career
Iggers was born in Hamburg, Germany, in Being a German Jew he fled Germany with his family to the US in , only limited weeks before the Kristallnacht.[2] Iggers belonged to the young émigrés from the Third Reich who later in life, as academic scholars in the United States, had a decisive impact on reviewing critically the history of Germany.[3]
In , Iggers became the first White brother initiated into Phi Beta Sigma, a historically Black fraternity.
He was visiting professor at the Technische Universität Darmstadt in [4] He was Distinguished Professor Emeritus at University of Buffalo and recipient of the First Class Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Iggers received the Humboldt Prize, honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Richmond, Technische Universität Darmstadt, and Philander Smith College, and fellowships from the American Philosophical Society, Fulbright Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Rockefeller Foundation.[5]
He was especially noted for his writings on historiography.
He died on November 26, , of complications from a cerebral hemorrhage.[6][7]

- Geschichtswissenschaft im Jahrhundert.Wilma and Georg Iggers came from different backgrounds, Wilma from a Jewish farming family from the German-speaking border area of Czechoslovakia, Georg from a Jewish business family from Hamburg. They both escaped with their parents from Nazi persecution to North America where they met as students. As a newly married couple they went to the American South where they taught in two historic Black colleges and were involved in the civil rights movement. In they began going to West Germany regularly not only to execute research but also to further reconciliation between Jews and Germans, while at the same period in their scholarly work contributing to a critical confrontation with the German past.
